About the program

The period between Years 10 and Year 12 is a significant educational phase for young people, and it is designed to prepare students for life after school.

Students spend a considerable amount of time contemplating their future and formulating ideas for their tertiary education and/or training options.

In Year 10, students are asked to make important decisions about their study in Years 11 and 12, seeking employment, exploring TAFE options or pursuing further education by gaining an ATAR for tertiary entrance.

Students experience study and leadership opportunities that will help them learn, grow, develop strength of character and help them become outstanding young men and women in their own field.

The program in Years 10–12 continues the approach of school-based assessment utilised in Years 8 and 9 and builds towards alternative pathways beyond Year 12.


  • QCE – The QCAA develops senior subject syllabuses. Results in general subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) calculation. Typically, it is expected that most students will complete these courses across Years 11 and 12. Students may be issued with a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) from Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) upon completion of their Year 12 studies.
  • VET – Vocational Education and Training (VET) is learning that is directly related to work. Such learning will continue to be a key part of the senior curriculum, learning and assessment in the new QCE system. VET certificates and qualifications can contribute to the achievement of a student’s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and provide a range of pathways to work, further education and training.
  • SAT – ޳-based apprenticeships and traineeships provide students with a clear pathway from school into employment and is a contract of training and paid employment. The student’s timetable or curriculum reflects a combination of paid work, training and school study, which together lead to the awarding of credits towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) as well as progress towards a vocational qualification.
  • ATAR – The calculation of an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will be based on a student’s best five general subject results, or best results in a combination of four general subjects plus a Certificate III or higher VET qualification. This is suited to students who are interested in pathways that lead to tertiary studies
Support and wellbeing

Years 10–12 at TAS provide a nurturing setting to equip students with the skills, knowledge, friendships and independence that will follow them through life.

The transition from Year 9 may be difficult for some students. However, the Year 10 Preparation Courses are designed to assist this transition, which is supported by passionate and dedicated educators.

If a student needs additional support, they can rely on their support network and utilise the many student support services available to them, including tutoring, counselling, IT support and research support through our library.

Co-curricular opportunities are available outside of the Australian Curriculum and take place during breaks and before or after school. They aim to extend and develop each child’s academic skills and are an outlet for exploring their curiosity.

Our programs in Years 10 to 12 support learning outcomes and reinforce skills in areas of interest. The greatest influence on academic performance is the Tutoring Assistance Program and Peer Support Tutoring, which provide students with a service that nurtures academic potential.
